- Autumn & Winter at Grandma's
Apart from the beautiful colours, the lovely thing about Devon in autumn and winter is how quiet the normally busy places can be. From National Trust properties to beaches north and south, there's space to think, talk and walk and sup and eat in welcoming pubs with roaring fires before returning to the cosiness of Grandma's Cottage. November sees the annual Uffculme Firework display at Bridwell. Choreographed by the brilliant award winning firm Sonic Fireworks, it's a local must see and only a stone's throw from Grandma's. Tickets are available from this Bridwell link. Later on in November there's the Exeter Christmas Market set next to the shining jewel that is Exeter Cathedral. In Uffculme the Christmas Lights festival takes place with the village and the church bedecked. There's a switch on ceremony on Saturday 22nd November from 5. 45pm in the Square.
- Summer's Here!
Wow, the sun has been streaming across Devon for weeks and the beaches are busy. Down in Dawlish Warren the special section of sand reserved for families with pet dogs has seen lots of splashing and fun. There's even a Punch & Judy Show to keep children of all ages amused. It's quintessential Devon by the sea. Dawlish Warren is on the corner of the mouth of the Exe and the open sea and there's plenty to do. look to your left and you can see Exmouth across the estuary. At the Warren, there's plenty to do - from fun fair amusements to a nature reserve and from the sea viewed from the spectacular walk into Dawlish itself there's definitely something for everyone.
- Spring is in the air!
Grandma's Cottage is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Rain or shine, there's always somewhere to explore which is why we see so many walking and cycling groups in and around Uffculme. Sarah & I love to walk with a purpose, which mostly means making sure that there's a pub involved! Indeed, there is a fabulous walk from the cottage which takes you along the route of the old Culm Valley Railway to the nearby village of Culmstock. The path wanders close to the River Culm across fields and through woods ending up at a picturesque bridge beyond which is an excellent hostelry called The Culm Valley Inn. It's about an hour's walk so a pint or two or preferably a lunch (or dinner in the summer when it's still light enough to walk back) is the just reward for your efforts. Culmstock also boasts the Strand Café which is another option for lunch. The village itself has a church worth exploring and has connections to RD Blackmore - the author of 'Lorna Doone'. His father was the Curate in Culmstock and he lived in the village for a while. He later wrote a novel called 'Perly Cross' where Perlycombe, Perlycross and Perliton, represented the villages of Hemyock, Culmstock and Uffculme respectively.
