Grandma's Cottage is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Rain or shine, there's always somewhere to explore which is why we see so many walking and cycling groups in and around Uffculme. Sarah & I love to walk with a purpose, which mostly means making sure that there's a pub involved! Indeed, there is a fabulous walk from the cottage which takes you along the route of the old Culm Valley Railway to the nearby village of Culmstock.

The path wanders close to the River Culm across fields and through woods ending up at a picturesque bridge beyond which is an excellent hostelry called The Culm Valley Inn. It's about an hour's walk so a pint or two or preferably a lunch (or dinner in the summer when it's still light enough to walk back) is the just reward for your efforts. Culmstock also boasts the Strand Café which is another option for lunch. The village itself has a church worth exploring and has connections to RD Blackmore - the author of 'Lorna Doone'. His father was the Curate in Culmstock and he lived in the village for a while. He later wrote a novel called 'Perly Cross' where Perlycombe, Perlycross and Perliton, represented the villages of Hemyock, Culmstock and Uffculme respectively.
